Japan Airlines (JAL) is said to be considering major route cutbacks to places like Singapore.

The Nikkei newspaper reported that the carrier may be planning a roughly 60 percent reduction in international flights at Kansai International Airport.

As part of its business rehabilitation, the financially strapped J-A-L plans to withdraw from loss-laden routes to rebuild its operations.

So far, it has crafted plans to abolish 50 international and domestic routes.

JAL is slated to abolish a total of roughly 21 international routes.

By the end of its 2009 fiscal year, the airline is likely to discontinue services from Kansai airport to places like Singapore and Vietnam’s airport in Hanoi.

The carrier will also end flights linking Kansai airport with destinations in Europe and the US, focusing instead on flights to Beijing and Shanghai.
