New Zealand to investigate whaling protest collision
7 Jan 2010

New Zealand says it will investigate a collision in Antarctic waters, after a Japanese whaling vessel allegedly rammed into and crippled a protest boat.

The regulatory body, Maritime New Zealand, is expected to hold meetings today to decide what form the investigation should take.

The New Zealand-registered Ady Gil, a futuristic speed boat, had its bow demolished in the collision with Japanese whaling vessel Shonan Maru Number Two yesterday.

Six crew members on the Ady Gil were rescued by another protest vessel.

Reports say one activist were injured.

The whalers and protesters blame each other for the collision.

New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully has urged protesters from the Sea Shepherd anti-whaling organisation and the Japanese whalers to stop risking human lives in the isolated waters.
