Britain's Liberal Democrats are attracting unprecedented attention as polls suggest they could end up as kingmakers after upcoming knife-edge elections.
The centre-left party boasts assets like finance spokesman Vince Cable, arguably Britain's most popular politician who once nicknamed Prime Minister Gordon Brown "Mr Bean".
But it only attracts around 20 percent support, which means Britain's third-largest party is highly unlikely to win the election, expected to be held on May 6.
But with Mr Brown's Labour closing the gap on Mr David Cameron's Conservatives to around five points in opinion polls, talk is rife of a hung parliament where the Liberal Democrats could hold many of the trump cards.
Andrew Russell of Manchester University said their post election status could be significant because they could hold the balance of power.
The Lib Dems, as the party is known, will effectively start their election campaign at their spring conference in Birmingham tomorrow. |
