A tough security law goes into effect in Thailand

A tough security law goes into effect in Thailand today, ahead of a huge anti-government rally expected to be held this weekend.

Preparations in Bangkok have kicked into high gear, with officials reviewing security measures as part of the implementation of the Internal Security Act.

It'll give the Thai military the power to call out troops, impose curfews and ban gatherings.

Thailand's main international airport, Suvarnabhumi, says it has contingency plans in place to deal with travel disruption or a possible blockade by protesters.

But protest leaders have said that theirs will be a non-violent protest and that they will not occupy public or private buildings.

Thai reports, meanwhile, say protesters have begun making their way to Bangkok.

The supporters of former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra plan to stage protests throughout the country tomorrow, before a mass protest in the capital on Sunday.
