Exercise utmost care and thoroughness

Singapore's Chief Justice, Chan Sek Keong, has called on forensic experts to exercise the utmost care and thoroughness in analysing evidence.

In not doing so, he said they risk assisting not in the administration of justice, but in the miscarriage of justice.

Chief Justice Chan was speaking at the first public forum on forensic science organised by the Singapore Academy of Law.

He emphasised that for a judge to arrive at the findings, he has to rely on the honesty and objectivity of the expert.

He noted that forensic science has made vast progress over the last fifty years as a result of advances in science and technology, making available a large array of forensic tools to pathologists.

Among the keynote speakers at the two-day conference is leading American forensic scientist, Henry Lee, who was involved in the OJ Simpson case.

Dr Lee said forensic scientists have to continue with research and training.

"Of course early days we don't know DNA. Now DNA we can actually individualise the person. Like ten years ago e-crime was never a problem but now that is a problem and so forensic scientists continue to study on solving the issues. Also we have started using artificial intelligence."
