The students from several neighbourhood schools are among those who scored well at this year's PSLE examinations.

Top PSLE student Qiu Biqing from Qifa Primary School did her school proud with an aggregate score of 290.

Although a consistent top performer, Biqing was surprised by her achievement.

Byron Ho with more.

Biqing couldn't read or understand English when she first arrived in Singapore from Guangzhou in 2006.

Over time, she got better as she made regular trips to the library and read widely to improve her grasp of the language.

Although there are no short-cuts for her success, she says support from those around her played a big role.

"My friends and teachers and parents help me alot. They always encourage me to speak English. They say it's never mind but if I cannot speak properly English with good grammar, but if I can just try to speak more English, then my English will improve."

Biqing’s English teacher Ms N Uma Rani commended on her positive work attitude and willingness to learn.

"Of course she's strong in all subjects but English was her weakest subject. She put in a lot of effort, she loves to read and I think that helped her tremendously. She used to write compositions every other day and passed it to me for comments and discuss with her friends who are slightly better writers."

Another student Joyce Sin from Gongshang Primary, was another top student who attended a neighbourhood school.

She shared how she studied for her exams.

"We study for a while and then we take a break, then we start study again. You can't finish all the study in one go, if not you'll really be tired out."

This year, just over 48 thousand 500 students took the PSLE.

Of these, 97.1 percent will proceed to secondary schools.
