It was first time lucky for Mr Henry Chew.

His first phone call to the MediaCorp News Hotline has won him a prize.

The 57-year-old taxi driver had called in to report that a speed camera was vandalised along Holland Road.

"That day, it was so coincidental that I was picking up a passenger, I drove through this Holland Road speed camera, and I wondered why there was white paint over there. I just wanted to let you all know about it, so you could take pictures of it to get some news."

He was one of three people who called the hotline to walk away today with $500 cash.

In 2009, MediaCorp saw about 40 calls a day - a seven percent increase from the year before.

Dr Chitra Rajaram is the director of MediaCorp NewsHub.

"We're engaging our audience, and our audience feels strong enough to call us and tell us, 'hey look, there's a great story here.' And all stories that came out of this hotline develop into bigger stories, which affected the man in the street, which brought about some change in the management, and in terms of attitude among the people."

The MediaCorp news hotline can be reached at 6822-2268.
