THU (14 Jan) - Julia Khoo (www.aromacookery.com)

Julia says: "Sungei Road Laksa serves the best laksa in Singapore, IMHO. The soup is so incredibly delicious, I can just enjoy the noodles with the laksa soup alone, without any other toppings. It's made with a very fragrant rempah (spice paste), and lots of oomph from savoury dried shrimp, which gives it plenty of umami (savoury) flavours. The soup is gently creamy and light so you can slurp it all down without feeling ‘jelak’ (satiated)." Read more

THU (26 Nov) - Julia Khoo (www.aromacookery.com)

Julia says: "They roast their own roast duck, roast pork and char siew. All are deliciously flavorful and juicy! If you like wanton mee, they do their wanton mee to near perfection here. Charred, fatty char siew, fat wantons, and a sweet sauce that coats springy noodles, the wanton mee here is one of the best in town."

THU (3 Dec) - Julia Khoo

Julia says: "Imperial Treasure is a well-known chain of Chinese restaurants in Singapore. This is their flagship outlet, which specializes in fine-dining Cantonese cuisine. In the few times I’ve been here, I’ve always been impressed by the caliber and consistent standard of their cooking. In fact, I’d say what they serve here is as good as what you get in Hong Kong." FRI (30 Oct) - Leslie Tay

Leslie says: "Wah Kee's prawn noodles really are a cut over the rest. The Uncle here does not use any pork bones in his soup but insists that he uses only seafood to make his sweet prawn broth. He has one big advantage in that his son-in-law happens sell seafood at Tekka Market and so he always gets first pick of the best prawns. Take the freshest prawns and mixed them with a lot of passion and pride and you get one very special and potent prawn broth which you can confidently bring any overseas friend to eat in order to show off Singapore food!"

FRI (31 Jul) - Leslie Tay (www.ieatishootipost.sg)

Leslie says: "With my new found fascination for sushi and sashimi, I was determined to learn at least the fundamentals of sushi etiquette. One of the things that I commonly see people do in Singapore is to mix the wasabi with the soy sauce and dip the whole sushi in it. This is really not the right way of doing it although many might argue that there is really no right or wrong way to eat sushi. For me, I wanted to learn the proper way of eating sushi so I approached Singapore's most famous Sushi Chef, Chef Nogawa of Nogawa Japanese Restaurant to give me a few pointers on how to appreciate sushi."

THU (30 Jul) - Julia Khoo (www.aromacookery.com)

Julia says: "This has got to be one of the best pork satay! Each Chuan Kee pork satay is a skewer of meat-fat-meat. It's so sinful, but utterly delicious! The pork is chewy and juicy, while the flavorful fat just melts in your mouth. Just as delightful is the tender and succulent chicken satay, made with thigh meat. Little charred bits give a sublime smoky fragrance. Both pork and chicken satay use the same marinade base. We could detect lemongrass and coriander seed among the myriad of herbs and spices used. It's obvious the marinade has deeply penetrated the meats. Although the sticky honey coating on the meat is lovely, it does border on tasting excessively sweet after a while. A little less sugar and more salt would balance the flavours out more."

MON (8 Jun 09) - Rayner (www.hisfoodblog.com)

La Petite Cuisine
01-05 Serene Centre
10 Jalan Serene
Singapore 258748

Rayner says: "La Petite Cuisine, an eatery that serves simple French fare with a delicate touch. For a no-frills, tiny establishment estimated not more than 20 tables (they have since expanded outside just next to the pavement), their menu is pretty extensive. You must definitely give the Confit de Canard with Gratin ($15.00) a try if you pay them a visit. The duck skin is slow-cooked to a perfect crisp, and fully flavoured. The mash that came with it was smooth and delightful too." Read more
FRI (29 May 09) - Leslie Tay (www.ieatishootipost.sg)

Leslie says: "Definitely a place I would recommend anyone who loves Japanese food. They don't serve Wagyu or any of the expensive stuff here, just simple homecooked Japanese cuisine prepared with lots of care and passion. Again, please be prepared to wait because Obasan will not let anyone else other than her daughters, into her kitchen. You can be assured of a unique and authentic Japanese food experience."

FRI - Leslie Tay (ieatishootispost.sg)

Leslie says: "So just how special is this Her Giao? Well, it is quite a different style of Her Giao from what I have been eating all along. The skin is rather chewy but somehow increased masticatory work you have to do brings out that extra "pangness" of the fish. Unlike other Her Giao, this one is packed full of the meat filling which has lots of "Ti Poh" (fried sole fish) in it. So if you love Ti Poh, you are going to love this. The soup here is very special too."

Ming Yun Fried Hokkien Mee
Redhill Food Centre Stall
11am to 2pm and 5pm till 9.30pm Monday closed
They fry Mee Goreng from 5am till 10.30am 9798 0133

LESLIE SAYS: "We were unexpectedly surprised by how good this Hokkien Mee was. It is the thick bee hoon with gravy version but it is fried till the gravy is just nice and greyish brown. That grey brown colour might sound a bit dreary but for Hokkien Mee lovers, it is a sign of a tasty gravy. For $3 a plate it is probably the best tasting plate of Hokkien Mee at that price."

MON - Samuel Leong (www.yum.sg)

Samuel says: "22nd April is Earth Day, and it was founded in 1970 by US Senator Nelson to bring awareness to world about the Earth's environment. In recent years, there's a lot of talk about "Sustainable Development". So how about we start our very own "Sustainable Dining" in Singapore? I'm talking about going Organic for the sake of the Earth!"

Big D's Grill
Blk 46, Holland Drive
#01-359
Singapore 270046

RAYNER SAYS: "One of his signatured dishes, the dazzling Crabmeat Linguine ($10.90) was immensely under-priced and overly extravagant with Shredded Crabmeat. HFB would advise one to go for the spicy version, as crabmeat is pretty heavy for the palate and tanginess brings it down by a notch." Read more

MON (13 Apr 09) - Samuel Leong (www.yum.sg)
